How can communication reduce health care variation?

Dr. Kishore Visvanathan is head of urology for the Saskatoon Health Region and clinical professor, College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. On March 8, 2012, Kishore delivered the fourth plenary presentation at Quality Forum 2012.

Kishore spoke about his desire for health care to be delivered with consistent quality no matter where a patient receives it. He used stunning statistical variations to illustrate how a treatment method can vary dramatically depending on the city or region in which a patient receives it, or even which physician within a hospital a patient sees. Better, consistent communication, Kishore said, can reduce this variation and ultimately result in improved health care delivery.
