Honouring Health Care Workers
Part of a series recapping Health Talks: Bold Ideas to Transform Health Care. Ten inspiring speakers, comprising a blend of health care providers and the public, used the Pecha Kucha-powered 20 x 20 format (20 slides, 20 seconds each) to answer our question: What are your hopes for a better health care system?

Derek Weiss is a storyteller, haiku poet, and Manager of Community Engagement at Vancouver’s Union Gospel Mission. He is also an occasional blood donor, as we shall learn in his presentation.

Derek was the fourth speaker at Health Talks. His images were by far the most simple of the night. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t effective! In fact, their simplicity may have been even more impactful. He told a story about a trip he made to donate blood at Canadian Blood Services, and wondered why all health care cannot be delivered with the same care for the patient.

Graphic Illustration
Graphic facilitator Avril Orloff transformed the Health Talks speakers’ words into brilliant illustrations. Her visual interpretations, which she steadily sketched beside the audience on a giant posterboard, captured compelling moments of each presentation over many different topics. Derek’s graphic is displayed on the left.
